The Humboldt County Sheriff's Office released new details on the death of a Winnemucca Police Department detective.
Detective Matthew Morgan died on June 25, 2020 of an overdose of fentanyl and methamphetamine.
The report states Morgan died in the Winnemucca Police Department evidence vault, after he removed fentanyl from an evidence envelope kept in the vault. He ingested it and put a plastic bag containing fentanyl in his pant pocket.
An autopsy as well as other evidence indicated Morgan may have habitually or regularly used narcotics.
Only four out of the 1,486 evidence envelopes had been tampered with, the investigation revealed. None of the four cases affected any past or present prosecution.
Detective Morgan was responsible for the tampering and he acted along, with no other officers or employees of the department having knowledge of his actions, the report says.
Had he survived, he would have faced multiple felony and misdemeanor charges.
